Ginger & lemon fizz cocktail recipe

Cooking notes

  • The sprinkle of black salt elevates the refreshing drink to something perfect for a summer afternoon.

  • Contrary to its name, black salt has a pinkish hue and a bold salty-sour taste.

  • Add the dash of rum if you’re in the mood for cocktails, or leave it out if you’d like to avoid the boozy kick.

  • Makes 4 glasses.

Ingredients

  • Juice of 1.5 lemons (3.5 tbsp)

  • Juice of a 2-inch piece of unpeeled ginger (by mincing finely)

  • ½ tsp black salt (kala namak)

  • 4 tsp brown sugar

  • 8-10 mint leaves, chopped

  • 2 cans of soda water (you can also use Sprite or lemon soda)

  • 120ml of white rum (skip if you want a non-alcoholic drink!)

  • 4-8 ice cubes (1-2 per glass)

Method

  1. Muddle together the following ingredients – juice of lemons, juice of ginger, black salt, brown sugar and mint leaves. Set aside in the fridge for 15 minutes.

  2. To serve, divide the muddled mixture equally between 4 glasses. Add 1-2 ice cubes per glass, per your preference.

  3. Top up with soda water and, if using, rum.

  4. If you’re not serving immediately, you can store the muddled mixture in the fridge for a few hours, and top up with soda & rum before serving.

  5. Enjoy your refreshing drink!
